ETCS Level 1 Pilot Project in Southern Railway
In July 2009 Eldyne commissions ETCS Level 1 pilot project in Southern Railway to demonstrate cross-vendor interoperability and performance in Indian Railways.
Eldyne – Thales (Austria) opted for a field trial of ETCS L1 technology to prove applicability, safety and operational benefits and cross-vendor interoperability with Ansaldo system in conformance with ETCS standards. Southern Railway and Railway Board granted permission for trial in 5 Km automatic block section between Gummidipundi and Elavur to demonstrate interoperability with Ansaldo system, which was commissioned between Chennai Central and Gummidipundi.
In the said 5 Km double line auto section, 13 no of signals are fitted with Thales-make ETCS L1 system. The signals are of automatic, semi-automatic and manual type; some signals protect level crossings. To implement ETCS L1, 13 Line-side Electronics Units (LEU) and 27 balises (Switched, Infill & Fixed) have been used.
